Grow a Grass Head

You may need an adult to help you get started.

If you have a go send us a photo to pop on the web - let's see who can make theest one!

Materials needed
  • Pair of old tights without holes in the toe
  • A small amount of grass seed
  • Potting compost (You can use sawdust as an alternative if you like)
  • A mug, straight sided drinking glass or empty jam jar to stretch tights over
  • Elastic bands
  • Water container
  • Optional – a strip of capillary matting to act as a wick
  • Plant pot
What do I do?

To make the head:

  1. Cut the feet ends off the tights but not too short – it is better to cut off too much and trim later.
  2. Place the cut off tights over the mug and fold back down the mug sides.

  3. Push a dip inside the mug so that you can place the compost and grass seed in easily
  4. Place a thin layer of compost in the toe of the tights. This will form the top of the head where the grass will grow through to make hair.
  5. Place a layer of grass seeds on top of the compost.
  6. (If you are using capillary matting then place the strip in the centre of the compost as you fill the tights).
  7. Place compost on top of the grass seed until the tights are full enough to form a head.
  8. Gather the tights together, squeeze the compost tight and secure with a elastic band. The compost should form a fairly solid head – if the compost is too loose then the elastic band should be used nearer the foot end to squeeze the compost up more. (If you are not using capillary matting as a wick then allow the tights material below the elastic band to trail into the water container to act as a wick.
  9. Shape the head with your hands

    To make the face:

    1.  Use your imagination to create and interesting face – some web links have been provided at the bottom of the page to give you ideas.
    2. You could make a nose by padding out a small piece of the remaining tights and sewing it onto the face of your grass head.
    3. To complete the face make eyes, eyebrows and mouth etc using felt, wiggly eyes, or sewing. Remember the face will get wet and so any decoration needs to be waterproof
    4. When the head is complete your will need to make sure it is well watered and place it in some sort of container to enable you to keep it watered. The tights or capillary matting should suck up the water into the compost. If the neck part is made up of a long tail then this can be placed in a glass of water with grass head sitting on the rim. If the compost dries out the grass will dry and die.
    5. Grass head will need to be in a light position too.
    6. Once the hair begins to grow you can cut it and style it.

Or you could make heads out of potatoes or turnips. Hollow out the top of the potato or turnip and fill with compost and grass seed.

You could also use cress seeds instead of grass seeds.

For the above options you will need to water carefully and regularly.

When your grass head is finished and its hair styled take a photo with your digital camera and get your parents permission to email it to us. Add your first name, your age, the city that you come from and we will put a selection of photos on the web site.

Do not put your full name or your address on any email if you do not know the person that you are sending the email to. Always get your parents permission before emailing strangers like us!
