Propagators
The use of a propagator can cut down on the amount of energy that you use to heat your greenhouse in that you can limit your electricity consumption to heating just the plants that need it rather than the entire greenhouse.
Many seeds demand a higher temperature in which to germinate than can be generally achieved in a greenhouse. Some cuttings are more successful when subject to ‘bottom’ heat. Not only are propagators useful for bringing on seedlings or cuttings but they can also be used to enable you to protect your most treasured plants over the winter period. If this appeals to you, you need to consider a propagator with more headroom! Good propagators also have controls which allow you to regulate the plants' temperature requirements more precisely.
It is important that your propagator also allows for adequate ventilation or plants can become subject to fungal disease. This is often achieved by use of adjustable vents.
If you do not have access to electricity because your greenhouse is situated on an allotment plot, then even an unheated propagator can provide some of the benefits mentioned above. It will certainly provide a humid environment for those plants that require it and the temperature inside will be higher than that in the rest of the greenhouse.
Those without a greenhouse may also consider the use of a propagator specially designed to be located on a windowsill where you can watch your seeds developing whilst you do the washing-up!
